The translation into Neapolitan of some verses by Dante Alighieri. It is the original tribute promoted by the newspaper "Il Mattino" of Naples on the occasion of the seven hundredth anniversary of the death of the great poet scheduled for this year. In line with the celebrations that are already being organized in many Italian cities, the newspaper has decided to promote this original initiative. Which many will appreciate and which brings Dante's verses even closer to the community. On the other hand, the great poet was one of the first writers to promote the use of the vernacular, the Italian of the time, in literature. And who knows that this experiment cannot be imitated by other Italian cities as well.

The homage of “Il Mattino” which re-elaborates Dante's verses

The project was born from the desire to pay homage to Dante. For this there will be a well-defined program. In fact, a journalist from "il Mattino" will have the task of "translating" into Neapolitan, every morning, inserting it in the reference verses, the word that the Accademia della Crusca will publish. In fact, with the beginning of the new year, the famous institution of the Italian language is paying homage to Dante by publishing some terms of the poet every day. Verses that will thus be taken up by "Il Mattino" but in the Neapolitan version.

And so an ambitious cultural project is realized. What the same newspaper "Il Mattino" defines as "Dante's word fresh of the day", like the Academy project. In fact, the institution for 2021 will publish 31 cards dedicated to Dante's work until 365 December. These are words or short lines that tell the poet's style and short accompanying notes. "So a chance to remember - explains the Academy -, reread, but also discover and deepen the great linguistic heritage left by Dante".

Where to see the verses in Neapolitan

The daily translations of "Il Mattino" you can see them on the Instagram page of the newspaper, simultaneously with the release of the verses on the Crusca site. "In short, an act of love - explains the newspaper -, towards the highest Poet who is linked to Naples by many witnesses. Starting from Piazza Dante, to continue with monuments and sculptures such as the tomb of Virgil or with the statues placed on the counter-façade of the Duomo, in which the features of three Angevins are repeated, mentioned in famous passages from the Divine Comedy. That is, Charles I, in Purgatory, Clemenza of Habsburg and Carlo Martello, in Paradise, among the loving spirits of the third heaven. Or with the frescoes in which the figure of Dante stands out preserved on the ceilings of the Neapolitan Archaeological together with the finds that, closely linked to the poet, are present in numerous collections of the Museum".

And since the Accademia della Crusca project began on January XNUMXst, the newspaper “Il Mattino” has taken up those of the previous days. We propose, then, the translation relating to the word "myrrh" published by the institute on day 6. These are some verses taken from the Canto XXIV of Hell “… Grass or fodder does not feed in his life, but only tears and amomus with incense, and nard and myrrh are the last bands”. The translation into Neapolitan becomes "… And nun se magna èreva or biava, but sulo sketches d'àmomo and de ncienzo, e 'a nardo e mmirra lo ccampare sprova ”.
