Italian craftsmanship is by no means destined to disappear

The excellences of Made in Italy:, especially in this period of crisis in our country, they represent our competitive advantage in a series of fields: from craftsmanship to manufacturing and food. Today design, fashion, jewels, ceramics can be a weapon against the crisis. Italian craftsmanship still exists in different forms.
Prestige, exclusivity and quality are the adjectives that best describe Made in Italy and craftsmanship in Italy.

THEItaly it must be able to exploit its competitive advantage, already recognized in the world. An advantage given by the Italian know-how and intertwined with the ancient traditions of which Italy is the main cradle.
If on the one hand our life will be more and more permeated by technology, information technology and robotics, on the other hand in the next few years the world of work will be characterized by the growing demand for professionalism. Professionalism based on human skills that machines cannot replace which ones  dexterity, ingenuity and creativity.

Does the craft of the seamstress still exist?

There are many girls who still choose to become seamstresses and aim to develop Italian tailoring. According to data from Infocamere, female and youth businesses (under 35) registered in the “Italian tailoring and tailor-made outerwear” sector recorded a positive surge.

But how do you go about becoming a needle and thread professional?

There are four different ways to learn the trade well and enter the world of Italian tailoring. You can choose the five-year public higher education training in the technological sector with a focus on the "Fashion Sector" of technical institutes. Or opt for Professional Institutes (address "Artisan and Industrial Production", articulation "Handicraft" or "Textile and tailoring production".

A second way, offered to those who have fulfilled their compulsory schooling up to the age of 16, are i free training courses proposed by the Regions. They last 1 or two years and allow you to learn the basic elements of cutting, sewing and tailoring clothes.

The third possibility is that of "vocational apprenticeship ". It is about training in the field with an apprenticeship contract with which the artisan companies hire young people who want to learn a job, in this case entering the Italian tailoring, and then setting up their own business.

A fourth opportunity, for those in possession of a high school diploma, is represented by the little known ITS, Higher Technical Institutes. Specifically, it is about "" New technologies for the Made in Italy-Fashion system ", lasting three years. They represent a valid public alternative to university and a real entry into the world of Italian tailoring. It is accessed upon selection as places are limited.

You can also follow the so-called fashion academies or, in Milan, the European Institute of Design. These are private paid training courses lasting from 3 to 5 years. They are more demanding because they prepare the professional figure of the stylist, the fashion expert, the designer.

The experience of Anna, a young protagonist of Italian tailoring

“I come from a generation of tailors. My grandfather was a tailor. The best-known tailor of San Cesario di Lecce, a village of tailors in the Salento hinterland. With the needle in hand by tradition and by passion, its thread has united our whole family from generation to generation ”.- says Anna.

“Even during the Second World War, when everything was destined to stop forever, my grandfather's sewing machine never stopped working. Over the years, my father took my grandfather's place by opening first a shop and then an exclusively Made in Italy tailor's shop in the city of Varese. And today I too am part of this wonderful artisan activity ".

“Employment in Italian tailoring is assured. For those with passion and desire to get busy, there is certainly no shortage of job opportunities. The latest research from the Confartigianato Study Center highlights how the Italian tailoring sector is a sector in which demand is far lower than supply. You can knock on the doors of ateliers, fashion houses, theatrical tailors. Also consider the repair sector, both as employees of specialized centers and by collaborating on your own with laundries and shops. "
