How was Black Friday born?

It is a rather recent recurrence, of American origin. It was created in 1924 by Macy's department store, to officially kick off the holiday shopping season, immediately following the Thanksgiving day. At that time, the mall offered unprecedented huge discounts, which attracted the attention of thousands of customers. The real explosion of the phenomenon, however, occurred in the 80s. But why is it called “Black Friday”? Various theories have been developed over the years in this regard.

discounts

It was called "black" because at the time, the accounting registers of the merchants were compiled exclusively in pen. The color black was used for earnings; for losses, however, red. So, thanks to the promotions that characterized the Friday following Thanksgiving, the accounts always ended up in black! According to another version, however, the name derives from the heavy traffic present on the roads on the day dedicated to the sales. Without forgetting the high turnout in the shops with the many customers who went there attracted by the maxi discounts. Black Friday occurs every year on the Friday following Thanksgiving which is a typical US holiday.

The boom in online shopping

Currently, both physical stores and online operators prefer to start well in advance, launching ad hoc promotions several days or even weeks in advance. In fact, it speaks of "cyber week”. And the offers are also extended up to the so-called “cyber monday”, another date that allows you to take advantage of important discounts. Of course, black friday, in addition to involving traditional physical stores, has become an unmissable event also in the world of e-commerce. After all, most of the portals adhere to the initiative, with incredible discounts and offers.

Initially, it was mainly household appliances and electronics stores that offered many promotional campaigns. Today, however, there is really spoiled for choice: from furniture to clothing, from home furnishings to accessories and beauty products. During the current year, Italians have seen an increase in prices in all spending categories compared to the previous year. Therefore, in the light of current events, 35% of Italians are aware that Black Friday and Cyber Monday offers will be less convenient due to the increase in costs for companies.
