"An entirely different fairy tale", this is the theme of the Carnival of Putignano 2023. With the'opening party the first big event was staged with a parade of masks and floats; to enrich the event Village of Fairy Tales with the Marzipan House, Gonfiabiland and the Circus of Fairy Tales. And you can also admire the great 20-metre high 'curtain of lights' from which the Paper Giants enter the parade. Animation with the “Radio Carro delle Fiabe Sbagliate” is also on the programme, together with many other entertainment initiatives.
This is the summary of the opening of the carnival events held yesterday 4 February. Today, Sunday 5 February, the program is equally rich and intriguing between theatrical and musical events and typical carnival performances. Masks, artists and extras will also return to the streets of the Apulian town on Sunday 12 and 19 February and Tuesday 21 February 2023, with the possibility of a further parade to take place on Saturday 25 February.
The Carnival of Putignano
The floats that parade at the 2023 Carnival in Putignano tell a fairy tale. This is the mission of the event and at the same time the challenge launched to the papier-mâché masters by the Putignano Carnival Foundation. After two years of forced stop due to the pandemic, for the 629th edition the new Board of Directors, led by president Giuseppe Vinella, wanted to create an innovative event. The magic word is "evolution": each float, just like in a musical, must evolve, mutate, change, reveal itself along the parade, tell the spectators a story. From that once upon a time, to the arrival of the unexpected, up to the teaching to be transmitted to those who attend the show.
In the era of storytelling and following the metric of a fairy tale, i papier mache masters with their works they must therefore speak to the heart and become the directors of a musical made of paper, glue, colours, movements and imagination. All without giving up the caricature satire. In fact, the papier-mâché masters were invited to identify among the puppets protagonists of the cart, and therefore of history, a recognizable face on the national or international, artistic, cultural or political scene. Therefore, stories of frogs and princesses, ogres, knights and puppets are ready to take on a new life, to become papier-mâché puppets, to change and tell their stories for the Carnival 2023.
