Andrea Bocelli will sing in the Milan Cathedral on Easter evening giving life to a concert event entitled “Music for hope”. The great tenor famous all over the world will perform, in the extraordinary stage which is the Duomo of the Lombard capital, but without an audience. This is in compliance with the restrictive measures imposed by government decrees to face the Coronavirus pandemic.
Bocelli welcomed the invitation of the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, choosing to sing in the ‘heart’ of the most affected region by the lethal spread of the virus. The concert will be streamed worldwide on the tenor’s Youtube channel. The pieces, for organ and solo voice, will be part of the rich and suggestive repertoire of sacred music. It will acquire even more meaning as it will be held on Easter, a day symbol of renewal and rebirth.
Andrea Bocelli protagonist of a concert event
“On the day we celebrate trust in the life that wins, I am honored and happy to say ‘yes’ to the invitation from the city and the Milan Cathedral,” comments the tenor who will perform without receiving any compensation. “I believe in the power the prayer, I believe in Christian Easter, the universal symbol of a rebirth that everyone, believers and non-believers, needs now”.
This is what Bocelli said, who will be accompanied only by Emanuele Vianelli, organist of the cathedral which houses the largest organ in Italy, among the largest pipe instruments in the world. “Thanks to the music that will involve millions of hands joined all over the world – announces the tenor – we will embrace this beating heart of the wounded world, a wonderful international forge that is the pride of Italy”.
Bocelli’s homage to Milan and Lombardy affected by Coronavirus
“Thoughts go to the city, representing a region hit to death by the virus, but ready to rise again – says the tenor. The generous, proactive, courageous Milan and the whole Italy will be again and very soon a winning model.
“They will still be the engine of a Renaissance we all wish. It will be a joy to witness it, in the Duomo, on the feast that evokes the mystery of the rebirth after death”.
The satisfaction of the mayor of Milan
“I am happy that Andrea has accepted our invitation – declares the Mayor – This year Easter will be different: the joyful serenity that accompanies it is greatly disturbed by the pandemic we are experiencing. I am sure that the extraordinary voice of Bocelli will be the embrace we are missing these days. A strong, special embrace, capable of warming the heart of Milan, Italy and the world”.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Milan and the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo. The concert is produced by Sugar Music and Universal Music Group thanks to the contribution of Youtube. In addition, Bocelli, with the Foundation that bears his name, is engaged in these days in a campaign on the Covid-19 emergency. The Andrea Bocelli Foundation (ABF) has in fact activated a fundraiser to help hospitals. The aim is to purchase medical equipment and personal protective equipment for those who fight the pandemic in the front line.
