Good news coming for the European vaccination campaign. A new vaccine may soon be approved byEMA. It is CureVac, a vaccine a Rna messenger, that is, it uses the same principle as Pfizer e Modern, Unlike Vaxzevira di AstraZeneca e Johnson & Johnson which are essentially viral vector vaccines. Developed in Germany, in the company of Tübingen, currently the experimentation would be in the 3 phase. The company that makes CureVac has assured that in the 2021 will produce approx 300 million doses and most of these should go to EU countries. This vaccine would therefore be a real "godsend", especially after the problems regarding the continuous delivery delays of AstraZeneca.
When will the Curevac vaccine arrive?
As mentioned, CureVac is a very similar vaccine to Pfizer and Modern. This means that it will need to be administered in two solutions (at a distance of 28 days). Furthermore, unlike other messenger RNA vaccines, CureVac can be stored at a temperature of 5% (i.e. in a normal fridge). To date, the German company has not yet published reliable data on the effectiveness of its vaccine. In fact, experts are still evaluating the possible protection against variants of Covid-19. The rolling review it was launched last February, so the first data could arrive at the end of the month or perhaps at the beginning of May. Approval by the EMA would therefore be near by now. As CureVac CEO stated, Franz-Werner Haas, in an interview with the US broadcaster CNBC, the vaccine may already be available from early June (or maybe as early as the end of May). The last word, however, will, as always, be up to the EMA.
If the European medicines agency were to give the green light to CureVac, the vaccination campaign could suffer theacceleration much hoped for, above all for the greater simplicity of management and storage. Furthermore theXNUMX-XNUMX business days is negotiating a new contract with Pfizer for the arrival of 1,8 billion doses for the two-year period 2021-2023. This agreement (together with the others that will be made with companies such as CureVac or Moderna), will allow EU citizens adequate protection also in the near future. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said she was confident that by July il 70% of Europeans adults can be vaccinated. This is an ambitious but achievable goal.
