It is never too late to save yourself from a sick love

On the occasion of the International Day against the violence against women to be held on 25 November I propose to read a book by Valeria Benatti entitled "Drops of poison ".

There are morbid and destructive relationships in which some women find themselves entangled without even realizing it.

And when they decide to get rid of it, there is a risk that it is too late. That's what happens to the protagonist of Gocce di poison. Claudia is a thirty-six year old, single, attractive, art supervisor in a publishing house. A winning woman, but only in appearance because in reality she is fragile and insecure. So, when she meets the charming Manfredi, a man older than her, separated and with two grown children, she immediately succumbs to his charm.

Unfortunately, over time, Manfredi reveals himself for what he is: an egocentric male unable to love, he torments Claudia with his jealousy, never misses an opportunity to mortify her. Claudia realizes that she has ended up in a Bluebeard's net, that she is living a sick love. She would like to get out of it but cannot find the strength to leave Manfredi doing harm to herself.

Manfredi comes to threaten her: “If you betray me, I'll kill you”. Words in freedom without foundation, Claudia believes. Instead the torturer passes from words to deeds, from psychological to physical cruelty. One day, after making love, Manfredi slides the blade of a knife from the belly of her breast. Pure hatred shines through in the man's gaze. Finally Claudia realizes how dangerous that relationship is. To heal from love addiction, Claudia has only one option: to dig into her past and understand where her need to suffer comes from.

Drops of poison is a novel by denunciation of violence against women. The introspective journey of the protagonist, who ultimately seeks psychological support, is what every woman should face.

All united against male violence against women

Violence against women is not a private matter but it is a drama that speaks to everyone and above all affects everyone.

There are questions that cannot be answered. Why in Italy every three days is a woman killed by a husband, a boyfriend, a partner? To date, 2016 women have been killed in 108.

November 25th is an opportunity not to stop raising awareness on the subject: against the violence against women there is still so much and too much to do. But talking about it, writing, telling stories, organizing initiatives, moving together with an anti-violence thought, is an important step to understand, not to be strangers, not to remain impassive in front of the phenomenon, to also help the victims to shake up and save themselves.
