The rector of the Federico II University of Napoli, Matteo Lorito, spoke to La Repubblica about the new project for the outskirts of the city. New universities on the horizon, which will change the appearance and reputation of certain areas, linked in the general imagination to the criminal world, which has obscured the honest and common side of the local population since time immemorial.

The rector Matteo Lorito explains how this is a very important signal: “The name of Scampia will be linked to Federico II and no longer to Gomorrah. You can change the reputation of a neighborhood and give a positive change to a whole territory ".
The countdown has already begun, with the project being defined. The goal is to open an office dedicated to the degree course in health professions in the area of the former Vela H in Scampia. Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, Lorito's predecessor as rector, explained how the Municipality plans to hand over the building in September 2022. Just in time for the start of a new academic year. A starting point, hopefully, which could open the doors to university diffusion throughout the periphery. The hypothesis of the Federico II is already beginning to arrive in decentralized districts such as Ponticelli and Bagnoli, after the excellent result obtained in San Giovanni a Teduccio.
The rector Lorito explained how it will take just one month from the delivery of the building to start the lessons. If everything were to be respected, the transfer could already materialize a October 2022. There could be room for 1500 people in the University of Scampia. A look also at the needs of the local population, with at least ten clinics that will open the doors: nutrition, diabetology, psychology, diagnostics and others.
