The new season of Greek tragedies al Ancient Theater of Syracuse, to be held from 17st May al 9 July next one. As already happened in the past edition, also for 2022 the INDA Foundation confirmed the facilities that will allow the widest possible audience to watch classical dramas in complete safety. The season of Greek Theater of Syracuse 2022 will open with theAgamemnon di Aeschylus, Directed by David Livermore (in the version translated by Walter Lapini). This tragedy, until mid-June, will alternate with theOedipus king di Sofocle, Directed by Robert Carsen (in the version translated by Francis Morosi). From 17nd June will then also go on stage Iphigenia in Tauride di Euripides, directed by Jacopo Gassman (in the version translated by George Ieranò).

Greek Theater of Syracuse 2022: the plot of the tragedies

The first classical performance scheduled for the season of the Greek Theater of Syracuse 2022 is theAgamemnon di Aeschylus. Part of the cycle ofOrestea, the drama begins with the arrival of Agamemnon at the palace of Argon, after taking Troy. Queen Clytemnestra, saddened by the death of the firstborn Iphigenia, "sacrificed" by her husband Agamemnon before leaving for Troy, prepares theassassination of the king together with the lover Aegisthus. Agamemnon then enters the scene with the concubine Cassandra, the prophetess of doom who predicted regicide. The latter's prophecy comes true and both will be murdered by Clytemnestra and her lover, to avenge Iphigenia.

Oedipus king di Sofocle begins 10 years after the events that led Oedipus to resolve theriddle of the sphinx and reign over Thebes, unaware that he killed his father and married his mother Jocasta. Because of the plague that devastates the city, due to the unpunished killing of laio, Oedipus seeks the culprit to exile or kill him. However, in just one day he will discover the truth about his past. Oedipus is the son of the king of Thebes, who escaped death as a child and was adopted by king of Corinth, Polybus. It was he who unknowingly killed his father. Discovered this Oedipus yes blinds and exiles himself from the city.

Iphigenia in Tauride di Euripides tells the story of Iphigenia, who escaped death thanks to the goddess Artemide and became his priestess in Tauride (Crimea). Here she is forced to make the sacrifice of every foreigner who lands on the peninsula. The brother Oreste, tormented by the Erinyes for killing his mother Clytemnestra, arrives on the peninsula with Pylades to steal a sacred statue of Artemis, bring it to Athens and break free from Erinyes, but is captured to be sacrificed by Iphigenia itself. Having recognized their sister, the three plan to escape by sea and save themselves from certain death.

Two special evenings

La 57th season of the tragedies at the Ancient Theater of SIRACUSA it also brings a novelty. The 6 and 9 July in fact, two special evenings are planned in which the dramas will be staged respectively Libation Bearers / Eumenides andOrestea (Agamemnon, Coefore and Eumenidi) by Aeschylus, both directed by the director Davide Livermore. The first two plays of the trilogy tell the story of the killing of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra and the revenge of his son Oreste. The third drama centers on the persecution of the latter by the Erinyes (due to matricide) and absolution in a trial presided over by the goddess Athena, which leads to the transformation of the evil Erinyes into benevolent Eumenides.

Tickets for the Teatro Antico di Siracusa 2022 season are already available from 19th April. They can be purchased on the INDA Foundation website and at the Corso Matteotti ticket office in Syracuse and al Theater box office. Prices (whole) range from 32 ai 68 €, depending on the sector chosen. They are also planned price reductions for some categories and for the inhabitants of the province of Syracuse.
