La INDA Foundation (National Ancient Drama Institution) officially announced the new season of classical representations al Greek Theater of Syracuse, Scheduled 3 July al August 22th. Like all the entertainment industry, the 2020 season was canceled due to restrictions to contain the infections. Now, however, with the loosening of the anti-Covid measures by the Draghi government, the most important cultural event for the city of Syracuse can start again. This year the tragedies staged will be the "Bacchae"of Euripides, directed by the Spanish director Carlus Padrissa and the "Coefore and Eumenides"of Aeschylus, directed by David Livermore. As for the comedies, however, Anthony Calenda will direct "Clouds"of Aristophanes. L'"Iphigenia in Tauride"of Euripides directed by Jacopo Gasmann (canceled in 2020), it will instead be re-proposed in 2022.
Classical performances at the Greek Theater of Syracuse: between debuts and welcome returns
La 56esima edition of the classical representations of Syracuse will therefore open on 3 July with Euripides' "Bacchantes". Carlus Padrissa, on his debut at the Greek Theater, he will direct among others Lucia Lavia, in the role of Dionysus. Lavia is not new to the Syracuse stage, in 2015 he had indeed interpreted Ifigenia in the drama "Iphigenia in Aulis"of Euripides, Directed by Federico Tiezzi. The Bacchantes will be followed by "Coefore e Eumenidi" by Aeschylus, the last two tragedies of the trilogy ofOrestea. David Livermore will return to Syracuse after the success of his "Elena"of Euripides (of 2019). At his side there will still be Laura Marinoni who, after playing the woman whose beauty was the cause of Trojan War, this time he will take on the role of Clytemnestra, Wife of Agamemnon and his killer (along with his lover Aegisthus), who in turn will be killed by her son Oreste to avenge the death of her father.
The realization this year of Coefore and Eumenidi (produced in collaboration with National Theater of Genoa) also has a special meaning. It is in fact the first classical representation staged in 1921, after the end of the World War I andSpanish epidemic. As for Aristophanes's “Le Nuvole”, one of the protagonists chosen by Calenda will also be there Galatea ranzi. The latter is not even a new face at the Greek Theater of Syracuse. In 2008 the actress has indeed played Clytemnestra in the'"Agamemnon"of Aeschylus (first act of Orestea), directed by Peter Carriglio.
Tickets can already be purchased from 29th April. For reservations, however, it will be necessary contact the ticket office of INDA Foundation. Who has already bought a ticket in 2020 (canceled season) will be able to reuse it for your reservation. Finally, it must be remembered that the Greek Theater of Syracuse, according to the recent anti-Covid regulations, can contain a maximum of 1000 spectators.
