A flavored cream with vanilla pods and bergamot peel, very soft, variegated with black cherry stracciatella, caramel crumble and pistachio sauce. It is an explosion of colors and taste that already in its name contains the beauty of an entire territory. It is the “Kalavria” taste created by Gianluca Marcianò from Reggio Calabria that conquers the final of the world masters Festival. A tribute to his land and above all to the typical specialties of the territory of Southern Italy, which appeal to simple palates but also to the most delicate ones.

An ice cream that tells a territory, this is Kalavria

Creativity and originality are the basis of this new taste created by the ice cream maker from Reggio Gianluca Marcianò, from the Matteotti pastry shop. Very young with his 31 years but connoisseur of the tradition and tastes that Italians like so much. And he himself recounted the emotion in having conquered this first milestone. "The name Kalavria - said the ice cream maker - I chose it to indicate the products of Calabria and the South, I want to bring to the competitions I do everything related to my territory where I was born and raised ". Marcianò also explained the particularity of this taste of gelato low in egg yolks and with the addition of Reggio Calabria bergamot. A simple taste, therefore, but with special, local and natural products, as the Reggio gelato maker loves to use.

The international festival

And so Gianluca Marcianò's Reggio Calabria ice cream enters the ranking of the best in Italy by right, so much so that it is chosen together with eight others for the international festival of its category. The final will be held on October 14th and will be an opportunity to admire the delicacies of ice cream Italian. And above all, the best Italian ice cream makers will compete to win one of the 4 places to represent Italy at the World Final, which will take place in December 2021.

A jury of important names such as Santi Palazzolo, master ice cream maker and AMPI pastry chef, judges the ice cream makers in the competition; Sergio Dondoli, master ice cream maker and founder of the Organizing Committee of the Gelato World Cup. And then Antonio Mezzalira, master ice cream maker and patron of the "Golosi di Natura" ice cream parlor in Gazzo Padovano. Many participated in the race. And the selections have continued over the years. In 2021, in addition to Marcianò, the “Colomba al Mascarpone” flavor created by Davide Pernaci of the “Stella” pastry shop in Caltanissetta was also selected.

The first finalists

And among the other names, selected in recent years, there are also Elisabeth Stolz, Lavinia Mannucci, Renato Marchese, Rosario Nicodemo, Gabriele Scarponi, Gian Paolo Porrino, Francesco Sottilaro, Riccardo Caruso. 52 ice cream makers from various Italian regions took part in the second Italian semifinal.
