The crucial importance of Italy in the history of the old continent is indisputable. Centuries and centuries of history have crossed our regions, redefining the boundaries of the territories we live in. Loves, conflicts, literary inspirations, explorations and all that man can think of. It is therefore impossible for a land so steeped in history not to also boast a large number of legends. The examples are innumerable and here is a very famous one: the story of the ghost of Malpaga castle. As in most cases, this creepy story has its roots in a dramatic love story with a nefarious outcome.

Malpaga castle

To visit the splendid Malpaga castle it is necessary to go to Caversham, in the province of Bergamo. The first news relating to it comes thanks to a document 1383. In this writing the castle goes back to a previous structure, built around 1100. Threatening and imposing impact, in line with the original purpose, that is to defend the fertile plain of the river Serio.

The centuries have not been kind to the castle, having fallen into disrepair in the mid-1400s. At the time it was bought by Bartolomeo Colleoni, local leader and captain general of Venice. In short, everything was transformed into a fortified residence.

The legend of the Malpaga castle

A creepy story that references facts that really happened between 1400 and 1500. Legend has it that a ghost still wanders around the large rooms of the ancient structure. A soul in pain that, from time to time, would show itself from the windows or inside the loggia. No aggression has ever been recorded by fans. No visitor has ever been harassed in any way. There are concordant descriptions on this. All speak of a gentleman who, according to his appearance, may have been around 30 years old at the time of his death. Fans of the genre have also provided specific details over the years, in reference to clothing. The ghost wears clothes from the 1500s. An elegant dress in dark velvet. Sleeves with wide puffs and a ruff to complete the sixteenth-century outfit.

Her face is framed by thick black hair, which falls to her shoulders. Sad air, pale face and perpetually sad expression. Hers is a very painful and, at the same time, particularly romantic story. It should be a noble man who managed to win the heart of a particularly attractive lady of the castle. It cannot be ruled out that it was the same castellana. A love destined to end in suffering and blood. Her husband discovered the clandestine affair and killed the young suitor. His body was thrown into a well in the castle. Since then his ghost has been linked to that place, unable to leave it. The testimonies are varied. Many go to Malpaga castle in the hope of being able to have a face to face with the ghost. The lucky ones say they had the clear sensation of being transported back in time.

Inside the castle

The castle is located in the heart of the Bergamo countryside. On all sides there are functional and agricultural buildings. Over the centuries, warehouses, stables, military buildings and peasant dwellings have been built around the structure. All as an additional protection.

It is a true classic in terms of its exterior, from the watchtowers to the crenellated walls. Added to this are a large moat, the ancient drawbridge and large loggias. Medieval aspect preserved, in the absence of significant restoration work over time. Inside it is possible to admire the large rooms and the fourteenth-century geometric frescoes, as well as the early 500th century paintings, commissioned to Romanino. There are also seventeenth-century frescoes, thanks to the heirs of Colleoni. A particularly lively place, considering how often private and public events are organized inside it, including medieval themed dinners, historical re-enactments, theatrical performances, workshops for children and summer campuses.
