Paolo Rossi

Paolo Rossi: story of a great love for football

The relationship between Paolo Rossi and football, as in the most beautiful stories of the great champions, is that of love at first sight. Born in PratoClass 1956, the young Paolo started playing in the Saint Lucia (district of Prato) and then to the Catholic Virtus of Florence. At the age of 16 he wore the shirt of the Juventus, in the youth. In 1974 he then moved on to the first team, where he stayed for just one season before moving on to the How to Live Aligned with. The turning point in Rossi's career occurred in 1976, when he moved to Vicenza (in Serie B) and met the coach Giovanni Battista Fabbri, with whom he formed a strong bond. Rossi that year will lead the red and white to promotion in the 1977 season and the following year the team will finish the championship in second place in the standings.

In 1978 Rossi will play his first World Cup, which that year was held in Argentina. The same competition also saw the young man's debut Diego Armando Maradona. There Rossi will earn the nickname of Pablito, which will accompany him throughout his life. In 1980 Rossi, who moved from Vicenza to Perugia, was struck by the scandal Totonero (football betting), accused of fixing the match Avellino-Perugia. Sentenced to two years of disqualification, he was readmitted in time to be called up by the then coach of the national team Enzo Bearzot for 82nd World Cup in Mexico. There the myth became a legend. In addition to raising the World Cup, Rossi will be the top scorer in the world championship and will also win the Golden Ball. After another three years in Juventus, in 1985 Paolo Rossi will move from Juventus to Milan, where he will play for a season. The following year he will wear the jersey of Verona, before giving goodbye to football in 1986.

Pablito, the "carrasco do Brasil"

Rossi's undertaking at the 1982 Mundial is linked to a particular match, that is Italy-Brazil played at the stadium Sarria di Barcelona on July 5th. Italy imposed itself on the very strong Brazil thanks to a hat-trick by Rossi, who was renamed the "Carrasco do Brasil"(Executioner of Brazil). That episode was never forgotten by the Brazilian people, so much so that it was also filmed in a funny commercial for the Brazil 2014 World Cup, in which a barber shaves Paolo Rossi himself and when he reads his name on his credit card the "Tragedy of Sarrìa".

Rossi himself will then tell about the match in his 2020 autobiography "I made Brazil cry".

Paolo Rossi: social condolences

There have been many social messages arrived in the last hours to remember Paolo Rossi. Among these, the National football team he wanted to remember him on Twitter with his symbol photo (with his arms in the sky) and the phrase "Hi Pablito. National hero".

Even his former Juventus coach, Giovanni trapattoni, he wanted to remember him on Twitter with the significant tweet "Hi Paolo… The players shouldn't leave before the coaches".

The president of the council Giuseppe Conte instead he celebrated it as a symbol of national unity: "In the summer of 1982 with his goals he gave a dream to entire generations. He was the symbol of a national team and of an Italy, united and tenacious, capable of beating opponents of enormous caliber. Farewell to Paolo Rossi, the unforgettable champion. Italy will remember you fondly".

Paolo Rossi, the Pablito world champion, who knew how to excite even the new generations who have never experienced his exploits, is only the latest famous victim (even if not linked to Covid-19) of this 2020 which has already caused too many deaths and too much sadness. His tenacity and determination and love for football have been an example for many young players who have taken inspiration from him. As for Maradona, the last farewell to Paolo Rossi also came very early and many of us were not yet prepared. Farewell Pablito, football star who will light up the next blue nights.
