A few km from Maratea, rises in the province of Potenza a small village immersed in the green of the woods and its gardens. Trecchina it is a real green paradise characterized by an evocative landscape and an enchanting linden scent. A small pearl set in the frame of a gentle Apennine landscape.

The Castle and the Piano di Trecchina

Even if only in passing, Trecchina strikes at first glance. An ancient Lucanian center, it is renowned not only for its landscape but also for its historical and folkloristic wealth. The village is divided into two nuclei: the "Castle" and the "Piano". The first is the ancient medieval village surrounded by chestnut trees and where the Baronial Palace is located. The Piano, on the other hand, is the current inhabited center harmoniously complementary to the Castle where it stands out Piazza del Popolo, jewel and natural stage of Trecchinese life. All around the Art Nouveau buildings that overlook Viale Jequiè. Each house is adorned with gardens which in summer see alternating artistic and cultural events inside them. Among these buildings, the former Palazzo Scarpitta and the Palazzo Mainone stand out.

From the sea to the mountains

The village is perched on a rocky spur nestled between mountains covered with coppice woods at a height of 500 meters above the sea. In the territory there are some mountain peaks: Monte Coccovello, Monte Crivo, Monte Serra Pollino and Monte Messina. From the top of Monte Serra Pollino (Santa Maria) it is possible to admire the area during clear days of the Aeolian Islands and a good part of the high Tyrrhenian coast of Cosenza.

Fortified by three towers, Trecchina it is characterized by windows, loggias surmounted by arches, balconies adorned with geraniums and mint that open onto a maze of alleys that climb from the valley to the highest point. In a few square kilometers the landscape variety is incredible: sea, hills and mountains. From the square continuing towards the coast it is possible to admire the extraordinary scenery of the Apennine mountains that plunge into the sea and the continuity of beaches, coves, gorges, ravines, caves, rocks and cliffs, which are surrounded by very small islets, rocks and shoals . An unmissable naturalistic show that makes Trecchina even more fascinating.

- the church of San Michele Arcangelo

In the suggestive Piazza del Popolo there is also thehe church of San Michele Arcangelo. Built with the offerings of the faithful between 1840 and 1878, it is one of the largest churches in the Basilicata. Nearby is the church of Sant'Antonio, built in the early 1925th century for private use and later deconsecrated. It was also used as a school building, but the belief that it was haunted by the devil who intended to appropriate the chapel gave rise to the need to exorcise it. In XNUMX religious services were resumed.
