Sanluri is a historic border between Cagliari and Oristano. A small natural treasure located in the central southern part of Sardinia, which became famous during the Middle Ages. The town is bathed by the Mannu river and develops around an ancient castle. The historic center is enclosed behind medieval walls, but the city has also developed outside. In ancient documents it is referred to as Sellori, which is the shortened form of logu de about them, that is the territory of the wheat. The current name was instead chosen in honor of the former patron saint, San Lorenzo.
Sanluri history
The true history of the Sanluri village develops from the Middle Ages, thanks to the fertility of the territory and its strategic position. From 1300 it became a fortified center, which developed from a small village around the castle, known as Eleonora d'Arborea. It is the only one still habitable in all of Sardinia.
Peter IV of Aragon took possession of it and in just 27 days had it fortified. It then became the scene in 1409 of a bloody clash between the Spanish army and the Sardinian Giudicale. Every two years, at the end of June, there is a historical re-enactment. Speaking of holidays, at the end of September there is the Festa del Borgo, which evokes the historical atmosphere of the place.
What to see in Sanluri
Sanluri Castle is certainly the main attraction. The small village, however, offers various treasures. To admire the Church of Our Lady of Grace, built at the end of the 700th century. The list is added Church of San Francesco, part of the Capuchin convent and located on one of the highest hills in the area.
