Certainly there is no shortage of initiatives to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the death of Supreme Poet Dante Alighieri, which took place in the night between 13 and the 14 September. For this historic anniversary, the Ministry issued three commemorative stamps, bearing tariff indication B.

A tribute to the genius he was, with whom we continue to converse after centuries, studying his writings and analyzing them. In the three proposed stamps it is possible to admire a clear homage to Dante's Inferno and modern versions of the author, imagined today as a thinker surrounded by minds darkened by social media, and intent on creating his great work.

Dante's stamps, what do we know

The printing was done by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato SpA, in rotogravure. Here are some details on the card, especially useful for enthusiasts:

  • Bianca
  • neutral coated
  • self-adhesive
  • non-fluorescent
  • weight 90 g / mXNUMX

As for the support, on the other hand, it is white paper, single-silicone Kraft paper of 80 g / m20. The adhesive section is of the water-based acrylic type, distributed dry in quantities of 48 g / m40. The dimensions differ, depending on the model. The version created by Corrado Veneziano and Francesco Di Pietro has a paper size of 40 × 48 mm, that of Paolo Bocci is 300 × XNUMX mm. One wonders, therefore, what is the circulation and how complex it is to be able to obtain one of these splendid examples of historic stamps. XNUMX items on the market for each stamp.

The work

As mentioned, the authors are Francis Di Pietro, Paul Bocci e Corrado Veneziano. The cartoons proposed are an exhilarating and magnificent tribute, which reaches out to the ancient past and tries to lead it into the present. In one of the stamps you can see the figure of a man with features similar to those of Dante. He is standing in front of the platforms of a subway station. Behind him there are several figures, seated, shrouded in darkness, if not for the light emitted by the displays they hold in their hands. They are as if hypnotized by their smartphones. Meanwhile, some books are floating around. This is the work of Francesco Di Pietro.

Paolo Bocci's stamp shows a young man with a head surrounded by laurel leaves. A classic icon for the Supreme Poet, made modern by the clothes worn. He is a young man intent on cheering, surrounded by sheets of paper containing part of his genius, while holding a pen in his hand. Finally, the work of the painter Corrado Veneziano is a tribute to Dante's Hell, with an evocative title to say the least: “Hell, evoking Buffalmacco”.

A coin for Dante

Not only local initiatives of various kinds and a series of historical stamps. One was also issued commemorative coin for the 700 years since the death of Dante Alighieri. This was issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance under the Numismatic Collection 2021. A coin minted by the Italian Mint and dedicated to Dante's Hell. Thus a three-year series is inaugurated, which provides for the issue of commemorative coins dedicated to Purgatory and Paradise, respectively in 2022 and in 2023.
