This time it is up to Lake Iseo, in Lombardy, the privilege of hosting one of the very special sculptural works by Lorenzo Quinn. Her large white hands will in fact be the protagonists of an original installation that we will see next year in Sulzano in the province of Brescia, on the eastern shore of the lake from where the connection with Monte Isola starts. There where in 2016 the attention of the whole world was concentrated for another particular installation, The Floating Piers, the floating bridge that for sixteen days had allowed you to walk on the waters of the lake and reach Monte Isola. A work that had brought one million and two hundred thousand visitors to Lake Iseo to see and “experience” this very special experience by crossing the floating walkway. 90 per cent from outside Brescia.
The hands of Lorenzo Quinn have now become a symbol of the American artist who in 2017 had chosen Venice, on the occasion of the 57. Biennale d'Arte, to install two gigantic white hands that emerged from the Grand Canal as if to “support” the Ca 'Sagredo palace. The work had amazed the world and caused discussion. What was the artist's message? Many had wanted to interpret in that particularly fascinating installation a negative meaning, "hands on the city". In reality, the title "Support" wanted to highlight the precarious balance of Venice threatened by climate change and degradation. So they were rather a denunciation and a symbol of support.
Your World, will be the name of the next installation whose hands support the whole world
The new installation on Lake Iseo will be called Your World, and this time the denunciation spreads to the whole world. In fact, two huge hands will rise from Lake Iseo, which in this specific case will embrace Planet Earth. Two white hands hold a huge silver globe where continents are represented by green areas covered by nature and forests, so suggests the rendering posted by Queen on her social profiles. The Italian-American artist explained that it is as if the hands installed in Venice had reached Lake Iseo by swimming. Only in this case they support not a palace but the whole world. A world that for Queen is in our hands and that we must not let fall and sink. The work, according to the rendering, should be able to be admired from the shores of the lake but also from an ad hoc walkway over the waters of Lake Iseo.
Sculptures as denunciations, the meaning of Lorenzo Quinn's hands
Climate change, sustainability, care for our planet, these are the messages of Lorenzo Quinn who continues to amaze the world with his sculptures. In addition to the large hands on Ca 'Sagredo, the artist has created another work in Venice. Those were the days of the Biennale d'Arte two years later, in 2019. It was the turn of Building Bridges, six gigantic pairs of white hands that formed a symbolic bridge joining two banks of the ancient Arsenal. The message: Better to build bridges rather than dividing walls.
In 2020 other hands, those of a man and a woman united with an olive tree in the center. They had been installed in front of the Cathedral of Palermo. A sculpture that wanted to express a message of peace and solidarity. Lorenzo Quinn, son of actor Anthony, was born in Rome and is one of the leading contemporary exponents of figurative sculpture. "His" hands are one of the hallmarks of a very personal artistic interpretation used as a form of denunciation.
