Maurizio Borsari, whom we reached on the phone, is the owner of a company that produces sophisticated devices. This invention, in these days of "coronavirus", saves lives.

In this specific case, we are talking about a device that is in fact the first line solution to facilitate patient breathing. In addition, the device isolates the patient.

The device is a true Italian excellence. With its function, it avoids crowding the intensive care units. Maurizio Borsari, back in 1991, creates the first helmet prototype. The idea was born as a suitable alternative to the hyperbaric chamber. Then in 1999, he founded Starmed, which is the first company in the world to manufacture similar helmets. They assist in non-invasive ventilation, or “Niv”.

The company was then acquired by Intersurgical. In 2002 Borsari also founded Dimar. The idea is to develop a truly global philosophy on the Niv, supported by very futuristic technologies. Currently, production on the farm tripled. It went from 200 to around 600 devices per day. The rhythms of work of the “Dimar” of Medolla, a small company in the lower Modena area, are currently very tight. The work shifts have lengthened significantly, in addition, the workforce was strengthened with the hiring of other specialized workers.

For such a delicate type of work, however, a period of training is required, as we speak of a very high tricolor excellence. The company, one of the few in the world, is specialized precisely in the production of devices for non-invasive ventilation. Let's talk about a product, which today is able to assist in a way very important intensive care units.

So now it is fundamental the "Cpap" helmet. In fact it is like a transparent cylinder, designed for hospitals and local health authorities. The helmet is inflatable, and looks a bit like a device for going into space. This helmet, or if you like, "transparent cylinder", it slips on the head, and serves for the introduction of sterile oxygen inside it. At the same time, it facilitates the patient's breathing and thus improves the clinical picture. Thanks to these combined functions, as we said, we avoid clogging the intensive care units.

Furthermore, being a device sealed at the neck, it isolates the airways from the outside world. This prevents possible infections. Finally, the cylinder is completely transparent and does not give a claustrophobic feeling. The helmet is inflatable and thus gradually improves the patient's clinical picture. Air and oxygen enter with positive pressure, which helps the pulmonary alveoli to open and work better. Non-invasive ventilation is used in patients with chronic bronchitis who arrive at the hospital in decompensation, or in those with pulmonary edema. The patient, however, struggles to breathe because the heart is not functioning well, in any form of respiratory failure. Many hospitals are organizing to order the device. Orders also arrive in avalanche from abroad. However, given the emergency, by ministerial decree, as Borsari says, the "helmets" all remain in Italy.

Italian excellence

CPAP helmets have proved to be strategic for the care of patients affected by Covid-19. The devices have the advantage of being effective, and relatively simple to use. Lombardy has bought more than two thousand with government funds for the emergency. According to insiders, these helmets they should be placed at the forefront of life-saving therapies. Currently, there are twenty-four international studies documenting excellence. Patients with severe respiratory crises with these helmets improve. Let's talk about studies comparing helmets with classic oxygen masks. They avoid the most invasive maneuvers. Intubation into the trachea is avoided. From a scientific point of view, the Italian technological level in this sector is very high. However, these systems are still little known and used almost exclusively in intensive care. We thank Bersari for the great help and we wish him and his team the best of wishes.
