The illustrations are by Chiara Tronchin, the animations by Heads Collective. The initiative was wanted by the Fenice to be present in any case in this difficult situation. Close to the public even if the theater doors are closed at the moment. Closed to spectators but not to the music that will spread anyway on Christmas Day and will be available to anyone who wants to attend, live or deferred, at this appointment. Art and culture must be accessible to an ever wider audience, this is the conviction of the theater managers and all its workers. What way and better choice, for this Christmas time, if not to propose the poetry of Pierino and the wolf in the refined setting of the Venetian theater.

Pierino e il lupo, a fairy tale in music designed for children and also suitable for adults

The history of this show. The first dates back to 1936. It was staged on May 2 of that year at the Moscow Children's Theater, the Nezlobin. The composer Sergej Prokofiev himself was conducting the Filamornica in the city. The work had been commissioned to him by the director of the theater Natalia Saz, director and pedagogue of great esteem also appreciated abroad. La Saz asked the Russian musician to create a symphonic work whose formal architecture was linked to the narration of a fable.

The story of Pierino, who with the help of his animal friends manages to capture a ferocious wolf, seemed to both of them an excellent starting point for finding good associations with musical instruments. In fact, Peter and the Wolf is not only a fable in music that teaches morals to children but also a composition that helps both children and adults to understand and get to know the instruments of an orchestra. A kind of manual, to be studied to get closer to learning about classical music.

Pierino and the wolf at Christmas at La Fenice

Prokofiev thought of writing himself, in prose, a very dry and exciting narrative text. The premise indicated the melodic profiles to be attributed to the individual characters. Here then is the flute that plays the little bird, the oboe that makes the duck's "voice". It can only be the clarinet that interprets the cat, while the voice of the grandfather perfectly matches the sound of the bassoon. Here comes the wolf, obviously interpreted by the horns. And the firing of hunters' rifles can only be the sound of eardrums. To the strings the task of giving the voice to Pierino. The musical themes of each character meet in the story. In the end, Pierino defeats the wolf, captures him and takes him to a cage accompanied by a triumphal final procession. An exciting musical fairy tale, a perfect show for the afternoon of Christmas day. A way to let everyone experience the magic of theater, even if from a distance.
