Uffizi, the news after the restoration

Various interventions implemented during the months dedicated to the restructuring of the Uffizi in Florence. The first striking element is undoubtedly the presence of as many as 14 new rooms, characterized by a total of 129 works. Some of these never seen before on display.
The first impact of the public with the "new" museum, however, occurs thanks to access system, completely redone in order to considerably streamline the queues that usually form, the cause of interminable waits.
An annoying element for visitors and, at the time of Covid-19, dangerous as regards the minimum distance between people in line. There are also new spaces dedicated to hospitality, structured on the ground floor, in the wing closest to the Ponte Vecchio. A total growth of over 2 thousand square meters, which will also attract tourists who have already had the opportunity to visit the museum in the past.

Never seen works

Looking specifically at the new contribution of works of art on display, here are some of the elements to be discovered, present in the new rooms for the first time:

  • Two paintings by Daniele da Volterra, follower of Michelangelo (depict the Holy Family, with Santa Barbara and Elia in the desert
  • Homer and the riddle of lice, a large canvas believed lost, by Bartolomeo Passerotti
  • St. John Baptist, a small work by Rosso Fiorentino

It is recently acquired works by the Uffizi, which thus enriched, among others, the new rooms on the first floor, dedicated to the Florentine, Emilian and Roman masters of the sixteenth century. Added to these are also creations that were considered lost for some time. In fact, during the restoration work, two frescoes from the seventeenth century emerged. One of these, attributed to Bernardino Poccetti, is a full-length portrait of Cosimo II de 'Medici.
The rooms created are also aimed at further enhancing well-known masterpieces already present in the museum. This is the case of Parmigianino's long-necked Madonna, placed at the bottom of a well-collected and deep area, which encourages one to approach the work. A particular effect that also concerns the Death of Adonis, by Sebastiano del Piombo, with the visitor who seems to be "pushed" into the canvas.
