The Middle Ages gave the world great works, both from an artistic and cultural point of view, and from an architectural point of view. Earthquakes, invasions, wars, were the executioner of beautiful medieval finds, such as castles and fortresses, often leaving behind only ruins. Luckily for us it didn't always go wrong, at least not for everyone. In the beautiful and very green Valle d'Aosta a few kilometers from the capital a castle has survived almost intact over the centuries. We are in the municipality of Fénis, where the Fénis Castle.

Where is the castle of Fénis

As beautiful as few others and well preserved. The castle of Fénis is located, unusually in a place that, for the medieval era, offered no defense, on the contrary, it was easily accessible and clearly visible. This particular location gave rise to theories that saw it as the administrative seat of the prestigious Challant-Fénis family. Over the centuries, the castle experienced what we can define a state of the art decline. The owners changed several times, as well as its appearance and the use made of it. Fortunately for us and for the many visitors, on 3 September 1895 the Italian state became the owner of the now decayed castle, giving it back the luster it deserved and that we can all appreciate today.
