Italy is, among the European countries, the one that boasts the most high quality brand products, agri-food products with the PDO, PGI and TSG denomination. Did you know that? This primacy was obtained thanks to the agricultural enterprises that produce excellences of the highest quality. Quality increasingly requested on the tables of Italians and Europeans, who pay more and more attention to what they eat. This is combined with a greater sensitivity to the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity, so much so that the consumption of 0 km and organic products is growing.
This also translates into greater respect for producers. Know where it comes from, how it is made and who the product is made from food that we buy at the supermarket is becoming a determining factor in our purchases. And here lies the importance of certifications: they serve to give guarantees to consumers, ensuring the traceability and safety of food.
Products with high quality DOP, IGP and TSG brands
With the label DOP we mean those food products with "protected designation of origin". The PGI, on the other hand, marks foods with a "protected geographical indication". To these is added the TSG label which indicates the “traditional specialty guaranteed”. The data, presented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Tourism, reveal that our country nearly 300 products.
We are talking, in particular, of about 100 fruit and vegetables and cereals. Then there are about fifty cheeses including Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, Gorgonzola and Provolone. And again the Pecorino Romano, Asiago and Fontina. The other half is made up of fresh meat and its derivatives, and therefore Prosciutto di Parma and San Daniele, among many others. And extra virgin olive oils cannot be missing. The value of these products bearing the certified European quality label amounts to over 6 billion euros. While the Italian regions with the most recognized brands are the Nordic ones: Emilia-Romagna in first place followed by Veneto.
Not to mention the wines
Furthermore, the beautiful country is famous for the nectar of the gods. The wines produced in Italy are among the best in the world. We own 526 wines with registered origin mark, out of a total of just over 800 in all of Europe. The turnover exceeds 8 billion production and 5 export. Among the brands that indicate the geographical origin of wines to the consumer are the DOCG, DOC and IGT. Acronyms of “Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin”, “Controlled Designation of Origin” and “Typical Geographical Indication” respectively.
