The Italian flag turns 226 today. Born on 7 January 1797 as a symbol of the Cisalpine Republic, the flag of the Italian state is the tricolor, green, white and red with three vertical bands of equal size, as required by art. 12 of the Constitution. The president of the Republic Sergio Mattarella he stated that "The Tricolor is a symbol of Italy and a witness to the journey that led to the construction of the free and democratic Republic".

According to the website of the Quirinal, the regimental banners of the Lombard Legion had the colors white, red and green. White and red, in fact, appeared in the ancient municipal coat of arms of Milan (red cross on a white field), while green were, since 1782, the uniforms of the Milanese civic guard. The same colors, then, were also adopted in the banners of the Italian Legion, which brought together the soldiers of the lands of Emilia and Romagna. And this was probably the reason that prompted the Cispadane Republic to confirm them in its flag.

In 1925 the models of the national flag and the state flag were defined by law and after the birth of the Republic, a presidential legislative decree of 19 June 1946 established the provisional shape of the new banner. New image then confirmed byConstituent Assembly in the session of 24 March 1947 and inserted in thearticle 12 of the Constitution.
The solemn changing of the Guard at the Quirinale
Today, Saturday 7 January 2023, the solemn changing of the Guard will take place in Piazza del Quirinale on the occasion of the anniversary. The Corazzieri Regiment and the Fanfare of the IV Carabinieri Regiment on horseback, during the exchange, will perform various classic pieces in honor of the Italian flag and state.
