Jewish Palermo. On the occasion of Holocaust Memorial Day 2023, CoopCulture proposes an itinerary to discover the Giudecca Palermo together with the places witnessing the events linked to the Spanish Inquisition. Among these, the old prisons of penitentiaries and the public squares of the auto-da-fe.

In the heart of Palermo among its suggestive alleys and a few steps from the most representative monuments, it is still possible to reconstruct the history linked to theold Jewish quarter of the citywhich was completely destroyed in the XNUMXth century. Just as it is also possible to remember the places that were the sad scenery of the "grand theater" of Holy Office of the Spanish Inquisition. Places that still coincide with some of the most important squares in the historic center of Palermo. Events also symbolized by renowned buildings, such as Palazzo Chiaromonte Steri, which was the seat of the Spanish Inquisition from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century.

Journey to the ancient city

And it is precisely from the monumental complex of the Steri that the path dedicated to the Jewish Palermo. The first stop is a visit to the prisons of the holy office, where it will be possible to observe the graffiti left by the prisoners on the walls of the cells. This will be followed by a city tour during which the perimeter of what was once the ancient Giudecca of the city will be retraced. A real historical reconstruction that will also bring to mind the places from which the processions of penitentiaries departed. Where, moreover, the auto-da-fe and the cruel executions were set up.
