A peccioli, a small town in the province of Pisa, la city ​​landfill it has become an opportunity for art and culture. Thanks to the revenues from waste disposal, the "Peccioli System" (this is the name of the project) has in fact contributed to the creation of two open-air theaters, theGreen Triangle Amphitheater andFonte Mazzola Amphitheater, places of cultural initiatives, shows and events. Not only that: the landfill itself is a place of art. And, the credit goes to the paintings and sculptures it is imbued with.

Painting and sculpture at the Peccioli landfill

A real open-air museum, the Peccioli landfill houses several works of art. David Tremlett, British artist, sculptor and photographer, has transformed his retaining walls into colorful geometric shapes. While the Naturaliter company has made four huge sculptures depicting people coming out of the ground. From 5 to 9 meters high, these "presences" want to convey the message addressed to the supporters of the initiative: new life can be born from waste. And it is thanks to all this that Peccioli is now known as a "contemporary art village". A reputation that has allowed him for years to attract artists and visitors from all over the world. Starting with the inauguration, in 2019, of the works of Tuttofuoco, Kwade and Tremlett.

The role of Belvedere SpA

It was the year 1997, when the perseverance of the mayor and the citizens of Peccioli gave life to the Belvedere SpA., destined to become a reference point for the development, innovation and economy of the territory. Composed of 64% by municipal management, and the remaining 36% by 900 shareholders, the innovative company, in addition to generating energy, is able to create destined wealth and reinvested in art, culture and development. Over the years, the Belvedere has in fact managed to generate revenues of several million euros for sustainability, art and cultural events. And, the Peccioli landfill is his most ambitious project.
