Cortona is a splendid village in province of Arezzo, among the most enchanting and touristic, recommended to anyone willing to try their hand at the history of this area. Cortona: history
The village of Cortona is located in a strategic position, which allows you to reach many places of great interest with short trips. Between the eighth and seventh centuries BC it became of great importance for the Etruscans, thanks to its position, allowing easier control of the territories.
Legend has it that it was founded by Dardano, son of Jupiter and Electra, later founder of Troy. Returning to historical elements, the imposing walls were built by the Etruscans and still today surround the city for about 3 km. Also attributable to them are the noble tombs scattered around the city and the funerary altar enriched by sphinxes, unique in Italy.
In 310 BC it made an alliance with Rome, as well as many Etruscan cities, which were subdued. The agreement was not respected, however, leading to a violent clash near the Trasimeno. Its great fame faded over time, especially after the occupation of the Goths after 450 AD. From the fifteenth century it then became part of the Florentine Republic, becoming a very important military center.

There are many places to visit, considering the cultural heritage of Cortona. The Cathedral is one of the main places of worship in the village. It boasts a Romanesque and Renaissance aspect, built between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. The interiors, on the other hand, boast eighteenth-century style renovations. Remaining in the ecclesiastical environment, walking through the streets it is easy to admire numerous churches. However, we recommend two buildings just outside the town, namely the Abbey of Farneta and the Pieve di San Michele Arcangelo in Metelliano.
Of great importance and charm is the Diocesan Museum of Cortona, which boasts among its various works the Annunciation of Cortona by Beato Angelico, dating back to 1430.
