International Nurse Day

It is since 1992 that the National Federation of Collegi Ipasvi supports the International Nurse Day to strongly underline the commitment of Italian nurses in the ward: a real alliance both with patients and with families. Nurses who always and in any case declare themselves for mission on the patient's side. And, right now, the patients for good or bad are all of us.

May 12 is therefore an opportunity to ensure that the nursing profession "talks a little about itself". It's important, today more than ever, for those masked men and women who have always managed a large part of health care in the shadows. All care work is sacrifice, not only physical, but above all psychological. We have understood this in these times (perhaps). Together with medical specialists, nurses have come to the fore and we have come to appreciate them. To love them.

International Nurses Day in time of # Covid-19

They, the nurses, have not deserted the "trench", a "front line more risky than ever, indeed, many have chosen to join it as volunteers demonstrating an extraordinary sense of community. Marked on the face by rubber laces and masks, by endless nights, by the pain of those who did not breathe in intensive care, they held out.

International Nurse's Day - idealization of the nurse as an angel

The response to the civil protection ordinance gives some thought #NURSESPERCOVID. Although each was already assigned to different tasks, ten thousand responded from all over Italy. We should never forget that. And we must not forget the infected nurses, or those in quarantine, isolated from families, sleeping in a camper after endless shifts. Or in many that in order not to risk infecting their loved ones, they rented makeshift accommodation. At their expense. For our sole gain.

Nursing sciences

Despite overalls, goggles, masks, gloves and every other precaution, the nurses were and are heavily exposed. We know that Italian graduates in nursing are among the most qualified and in demand in the world, and have been able to withstand the shock wave. But there have been fallen. Among nurses, there was the largest number of Covid-positive health workers, around 52%. There are those who have been missing. We should bear remembrance and awareness of it. Not just May 12.

Italian health

Let us therefore remember today, but also tomorrow and in a year's time, what was the answer of almost 10 thousand professionals to the call of the Civil Protection for a task force of 500 nurses to be allocated to the areas most at risk. We remember, above the fabric of their masks, as human eyes, fearful, tenacious, full of stories. Stories they have set aside to serve. To allow us to breathe again.

Thanks. From the heart
