Mediterranean diet on the first step of the podium. The diet born in Nicotera in Calabria and based on the typicality of the excellent agri-food products, it was classified as best diet in the world of 2023 ahead of dash and flexitarian, according to the rankings of US News & World Report which examined a total of 24 diets. In fourth place the mind diet which prevents and reduces cognitive decline and fifth place for diet TPA (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) created by the National Cholesterol Education Program of the National Institutes of Health with the aim of reducing cholesterol.

“Once again the Mediterranean diet gets the recognition of the best diet in the world. Our reference food model proves to be a winner. It is the healthiest, as well as the most sustainable. It is the best response to misleading models that only aim to condition consumers, such as Nutriscore, or to those who would like insect-based products or synthetic foods on our tables”. Thus the Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Luigi D'Eramo commenting on the US News & World Report ranking.

“For the sixth consecutive year – the undersecretary points out – the Mediterranean diet, which is also a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, remains on the top step of the podium, ahead of the dash diet and the flexitarian diet. All three of these diets – continues D'Eramo – reduce or completely eliminate processed foods, preferring fresh foods”.

The healthiest and most sustainable diet

According to nutritionists and experts, the Mediterranean diet is confirmed as the best also because it focuses on the quality of the diet rather than on a single nutrient or group of foods. It also takes the top spot for bone and joint health, is the best family diet, for healthy and plant-based eating. “A diet – recalls D'Eramo – which also includes a fair consumption of wine. We will do everything - concludes the undersecretary - to defend this winning model from any type of attack".
