It is called Urban Creativity in Italy and is the project to which the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, through the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity (DGCC), is about to give shape in order to enhance the vast Italian heritage of contemporary outdoor artworks. A mapping but not only: a real first scientific investigation on the urban creativity of our country, a critical survey on national territory.

We needed this project because it will allow those who want to approach these particular forms of expression with greater awareness, from north to south. Within the program a special section entitled Art in public spaces will allow us to deepen our knowledge of street art thanks to the contributions of a research committee, of historical-artistic, socio-cultural and regulatory value.

The enhancement program of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity (DGCC), which in recent years has curated fundamental projects such as the Italian Council, the New York Prize and the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, ultimately provides for the activation of a first Italian map of urban creativity. It will include street art, murals and graffiti. The detailed investigation will be conducted thanks to the collaboration with Inward, the National Observatory on Urban Creativity, with which MiBACT has entered into an ad hoc agreement.

Since 2004 Inward (International Network on Writing Art Research and Development) has been involved in research and development of urban creativity (street art, urban design, graffiti, wall painting) in the public, private, non-profit and international sectors, has a team in its staff of researchers and teachers, offers business consultancy, and promotes the best Italian and international street artists.

In Urban Creativity in Italy its scientific committee will have the task of studying and disseminating knowledge on the increasingly present phenomenon of street art. Not just graffiti, but all related forms of expression: from the murals of denunciation to the world of urban design.

“It is essential to have a clear and precise picture on the subject – says Margherita Guccione, director of Contemporary Creativity – and we are pleased to have started this program with an explicit exploratory and cognitive value with Inward. A signal of consideration and interest from this General Management towards a complex and dynamic reality which, although under everyone’s eyes, today needs cognitive attention in various aspects”.
